1986 Suzuki GSX 400 XS Impulse

Owner:
,
Auckland, New Zealand
Comments: ”Thanks for the specs on the Suzuki GSX400XS Impulse. I have one myself, but have never had an owners manual (it was probably written in Japanese anyway if there was one) — and so have found all the interesting bits I needed from here (e.g. dry weight, bore x stroke etc.).
I've included some photos of my bike. I do not know the model year of my bike - except that they became on sale in New Zealand in 1987 after the Japanese had excess left over from their own domestic market. I suspect it's a 1986.
I am the second owner, and have owned it since February 1989 and plan to never sell it — and the bike has been used in all manner of ways — from round-town city-bike, to F3 race-bike, to long-haul tourer (it's done five 24-hour 1000 mile Grand Challenges).
The bike has now traveled over 130,000 km and is essentially in original condition except for a remote reservoir (from a Honda XR I believe) which was attached to the "non-rebuildable" rear-shock — a solution which I believe bought no real benefit.
What do I think of my bike? Well, all I can say is that I love riding it, always have — and we have been in too many great situations to ever see ourselves part ways for any reason. I would love to learn more about the machine if anyone else out there has any official suzuki documentation. Always looking for spare parts etc.”

1986 Suzuki GSX 400 X Impulse

Owner: Kent, Denmark
Comments: ”I have just got my first motorcycle, a Suzuki GSX400X Impulse from 1991.
As you can see it is modified. Take it or leave it, here it is...”
Kent may have bought his bike as a 1991-year's model but I believe the actual model year for the original bike was 1986. The front end seems to come from a from a different bike. Looks good, though.

1981 Suzuki GSX 1100 E

Owner:
Allan Tucker, Barbados
Comments: ”I had just brought this item home to do a full restore on it, and as always a full stripping of every part is in order on this bike. It's a GSX1100E model that's been left to the elements in a shed for a good many years, and as you can see surface rust is everywhere.
I do have almost all the parts needed to make it concours correct and will be working on it full time shortly. It's starting, but the carbs were in need of full cleaning as it was not taking throttle, it only ran (sort of) on choke.
The bikes only got on 9,118 original miles on it, so the engine's technically not even properly run in yet by Suzuki standards.
There's lots of stripping and repainting to do here with rigorous cleaning of the other items needed on this one,. It's my biggest bike project so far for its engine size.
I think this models overall design has aged much better than the ones right after it for some reason, which look less well finished.
As of now the carbs were removed completely stripped and cleaned to (like new) spec inside and out. All I need now is to reassemble the carbs onto their brackets, fit them up, re-syncronise the intake vacuums and that problem should be solved.
Once I refit them and make sure the engines performing correctly I remove them (again) and strip out the engine from the frame. Once done then I'll strip the other parts so I can carry the frame to be sandblasted along with all the other parts needing to be re-sprayed in black.
My plan with restorations is always to get a rolling chassis together as quickly as possible so the re-build goes smoother. While things are being painted I can clean and service the forks, calipers, master cylinders etc. so they can go back on to the all important re-painted frame.
This is going to be a long restoration job since I've got my real job to do as well.”

1996 Suzuki GSX-R 750

Owner: Justin Coombs,
Australia
Comments: ”I bookmarked your site a couple of years ago when I was looking for information about my Suzuki Across. I've since upgraded to a 1996 GSX-R750, and just noticed your request for pictures of bikes, so I thought I'd send you mine.
The only modifications to it are a Vance & Hines RS2 pipe, jetted carburettors and an auxiliary fan switch on the right handlebar to engage the cooling fan while stuck in traffic on a hot day.
I bought it in September 2005 for AUD $6800, with 28,000 km on the clock. It has suffered some damage since this photo was taken, in a low-speed highside. The left front fairing is in pieces, the frame is dented where the steering damper hit the road, and there are some scuffs on the left rear tailpiece. However the bike still rides and handles well, even without the steering damper (although I will replace this when I have enough money). I have so far been unsuccessful in sourcing a new frame and left-side fairing, but I'm still looking.
Planned future modifications are all mostly cosmetic. Carbon-fibre frame covers and crash-bars are first on the list. I've bought an undertail kit, but I won't install it until I get a rear hugger. I'll be replacing the front guard with a carbon-fibre piece, since the existing one has cracks and chunks of plastic missing due to a disc-lock.”
