Suzuki GSX-R1000 model history
2017—2019

I have tried to tell the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 model history on this page as I know it. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

This is a growing web site, managed by one private person.

The last time Suzuki modernisized its GSX-R1000 was in 2012 (updated exhaust, suspension, and brakes), and the last major update was in 2009.In 2017 it was time to upgrade the GSX-R1000 with new chassis, engine, and electronics package.

The next-gen “Gixxer” 1000 brings an all-new 999.8 cc powerplant with a claimed 199 horsepower at the shaft and a whole passel of electronic goodies to help manage all that power. Traction control, lean-sensitive ABS, launch control and more, Suzuki’s flagship Gixxer comes equipped with overlapping safety nets to help keep us mortal, non-professional riders dirty-side down as we explore our electronically augmented performance envelope. MotoGP tech influences the design to give the rider a little taste of track-day performance, or at the very least, ’performance light.’

Three different versions were available: The GSX-R1000 base model, GSX-R1000 ABS, and the top-of-the-line GSX-R1000R. The non-ABS base-model GSX-R1000 was only available in USA.

The ABS system in the remaining two models includes Suzuki’s Motion Track rear wheel lift mitigation function. The Motion Track Brake System provides the appropriate amount of braking force. However, when the IMU detects rear wheel lift, the ABS adjusts front brake pressure to reduce it.

The 2017 Suzuki GSX-R1000 is noticeably narrower than the previous generation, and the fuel tank is smaller and the upgraded brakes now have slightly larger Brembo T-Drive 320mm rotors.

Suzuki’s goal for the GSX-R engine was to make it smaller, lighter, and have more useable power. Bore and stroke go from 74.5mm x 57.2mm on the previous model to 76.0mm x 55.1mm, a ratio that promotes better top-end performance. The entire valve train is updated, Suzuki having moved to a finger follower system (versus a bucket tappets setup) that allows for bigger cam lobes, and replaced the steel exhaust valves with smaller, 24mm titanium pieces (versus 25mm). The resulting weight savings allowed engine designers to raise the rev ceiling by an impressive 1,000 rpm, to 14,500 rpm, which when combined with new, 1.5mm larger intake valves (also titanium) contributes—again—to a much-needed boost in top-end power output.

It’s not all about high rpm though, which is why Suzuki has added a variable valve timing system, one that it claims is identical (in design) to the one on its MotoGP bike, and that it has apparently been using on GSX-R1000-based superbikes for a few years now. Dubbed Suzuki Racing Variable Valve Timing (SR-VVT), the system uses centrifugal force to move 12 steel balls toward the outer edge of the intake cam sprocket at high rpm, thus rotating the position of the cam sprocket on the

The 2017 GSX-R1000 oozes MotoGP influence; from the class exclusive Variable Valve Timing, (VVT), system that helps deliver a broad and strong powerband, to the compact cassette transmission, a 32-bit dual-processor ECM, 10-level traction control system, and wind tunnel tested aerodynamics, the GSX-R1000 was designed with one idea in mind, to regain the undisputed “King of the Sportbikes” crown. The new lighter and stronger aluminum, twin-spar frame features quality components like the Showa BPF fork and rear shock, Brembo monobloc calipers and T-drive rotors, and a large full LCD display help the new GSX-R1000 lay claim to the title.

The GSX-R1000R is ”the Ultimate GSX-R”. Suzuki engineers took everything that made the standard 2017 GSX-R1000 the “king of the Sportbikes” and  ramped it up by adding advanced rider aids such as the IMU-influenced Motion Track Anti-Lock Brake System, clutchless up-and-down quick shifting, and a launch control system that gets the rider out front fast. Other features include a compact competition battery, lightweight upper fork clamp, and LED position lights above the fairing’s large ram-air ducts. Combine all that with the responsive Showa BFF fork and BFRC shock and you have a bike that will stand at the top of the liter bike podium.

New features for the 2019 GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R models
New colors and graphics.
The color of muffler body is changed from silver to black.
The bi-directional quick shift system is now standard equipment for GSX-R1000.
The 2019 GSX-R1000/R adopts new Bridgestone Battlax Racing Street RS11. The new tire pattern improves wear resistance and reduces lowering gripping force. It also provides high cornering performance.

The part of the frame connecting to the swing arm pivot is newly variable on the GSX-R1000R (comply with new race regulation). Please be sure to ride on the standard position on the public road. On the GSX-R1000R the rubber front brake hoses are swapped for braided stainless steel.

The GSX-R1000R model's launch control system makes it easier for a racer to get a good start in closed-course competition by automatically limiting engine rpm and optimizing torque delivery while the rider holds the throttle twist grip wide open and concentrates on feeding in the clutch lever.
The GSX-R1000R model features the Showa Balance Free Front (BFF®) forks, which were developed for racing use and have been adapted to mass production. BFF forks provide more consistent damping and enhanced performance, increasing cornering traction by delivering smoother, more controlled travel and doing a better job of dealing with pavement imperfections.
The GSX-R1000R model features the Balance Free Rear Cushion (BFRC®) lite. On the street, the BFRC lite shock absorber is more responsive and improves traction and rider comfort. Damping adjustment controls are conveniently located and clearly labeled on the upper shock body, and the BFRC lite shock absorber works with a progressive linkage.
