Second generation — 2003–2016

I have tried to tell the SV 650 and SV 650 S model histories on this page as I know it. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. This is part 2 of the Suzuki SV650 story. It covers model years 2003–2016.

2003 Suzuki year code: K3

A totally redesigned SV650 was introduced for the 2003, simultaniously with its big brother, SV1000, the successor for the TL1000. The SV650 got a similar new alumium frame as the SV1000 and same design. The engine deliveres the same output as on earlier models, but the carburettors have now been replaced by electric fuel injection, featuring the Suzuki Dual Throttle valve System (SDTV) and Auto Fast Idle System (AFIS). Also the In spite of their identical appeance, the SV650 and 1000 have nevertheless each one a framework specific and dimensioned to accomodate engines necessarily more or less bulky and powerful. Another evolution of size, the SV650 has upgraded with electronic injection, coupled to an injection of air to the exhaust and with a catalysed silencer. One notices the rather massive head of fork of the SV650S and the curious bars of leds of the rear light. New is also the instrument panel with the central rev counter, the window with liquid crystals for speed, mileages, the temperature engine, the clock and the indicator of reserve. Subframe lowered 40mm for more comfortable passenger seating position, more compact rear fender. 2005 Suzuki year code: K5

The 2005 SV650 K5 saw a couple of minor changes. It was equipped with a meter visor that was color matched with the body parts and its center part was composed of a smoke-cleared shield. It makes a new image of cockpit area. Also the front brake cylinder head (the liquid reservoir) got a new style. The radiator was redesigned, 40mm narrower than on earlier models. The last year of the second generation SV650. The Suzuki Gladius 650 replaced the SV650 in 2009, althought it seems that the second generation SV650S continued to be sold alongside the Gladius in many countries. The Gladius 650 was its place replaced by a third generation SV650 in 2016. Colors: Metallic Triton Blue (YSF), Oort Gray Metallic (YHG)

The next generation of Suzuki SV650 was introduced to the world at EICMA, an annual trade show in Milan, Italy, in November 2015. The new improved and redesigned SV650 was available in the shops in June 2016 as a 2017-model year product. From the press release dated 17 November, 2017: Based on the current 645cm3 V-twin engine, the all-new road sport bike SV650 meets the new exhaust gas restriction of Euro4 (for European spec) while enhancing output and fuel efficiency. By reviewing the body in detail, it has realized weight reduction of 8kg compared to the Gladius (ABS spec), which is installed with the current engine. Lightweight and slim body enhances the strength of V-twin engine while contributing to high maneuverability. Each piston skirt is tinned and resin coated, resulting in reduction of mechanical loss and greater combustion efficiency. Also, Low RPM Assist is adopted to help rider for smoother launching operation in low rpm range. By slightly raising engine rpm, it makes it easy to ride at low speed in stop and go traffic. Moreover, Suzuki Easy Start System, which enables the rider to just one-push the starter instead of press-holding it to start the engine, is adopted, enhancing user-friendliness in daily usage. Suzuki plans to produce SV650 from January 2016 at the Toyokawa Plant in Japan, and start its sales in markets such as Europe and North America.
