Suzuki Hi UP (CA1DA/CA1DB)
Hi UP (CA1DA) 1988—1995
Hi UP R (CA1DB) 1988—1993

I have tried to tell the Suzuki Hi-UP (CA1DA) / Hi-UP R (CA1DB) model history on this page as I know it. The page is still under construction. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

.
Suzuki Hi-UP (even spelled ith capital letters ”HI UP”), launched in September 1988, was an updated model of the Suzuki AE50 scooter, aimed at active young people, with sporty styling but with low seat and ample foot space, allowing for a unrestrained riding position.

Like its predecessor, the Hi-UP had a 50cc air-cooled two-stroke engine delivering a maximum output of 6.5 hp. It was tuned with an emphasis on low and medium speed acceleration, allowingr a relaxed ride. Its new pattern tires with high grip and a front suspension with a long stroke improved theride comfort and handling stability.

1988 was the year when changes were seen in the sports scooter category, where a fierce spec battle had been unfolding since the late 1980s. Honda's DJ-1R, a rival model of the Suzuki's HI series of lightweight sports machines equipped with a 6.5 horsepower engine, underwent a full model change and released the Honda DJ-1RR, which increased power from 6 hp to 6.8 horsepower.

Suzuki also released a machine that was an even sportier tune-up of the "HI-UP" that was released in the same year. This was the "HI-UP R," also released in 1988. It was released at 139,000 yen, 25,000 yen higher than the standard model. The regular type was also positioned as a sports scooter, but it was further improved and debuted with improved driving performance.

The exterior styling was equipped with aero parts such as an under-cowl with an air intake. The muffler was also equipped with a chamber type. The large rear spoiler used in the previous model was not installed.

The powertrain is the A130 type, which is based on the standard model and has a compression ratio of 7.4 to 7.6. The air-cooled two-stroke single cylinder produces 7 horsepower. It is slightly more powerful than the rival "DJ 1RR" and 0.5 horsepower higher than the standard grade "HI-UP". Maximum torque is also slightly improved at 0.75 kgm. The suspension is equipped with a bottom-link suspension with excellent road-following performance at the front. In addition, the front brake is a large 162 mm disc brake. It has a suspension specification that sets it apart from rival models with drum brakes.

Since its debut, the "HI-UP R" has not undergone any major specification changes, and the price was raised in 1992 to 145,000 yen (excluding tax). It was sold until 1993 and then discontinued. The actual successor model is the "Sepia" series, which appeared in 1989. The base model "HI-UP" was sold until 1995.
