1987 preview, some facts about
the upcoming motorcycle models,
published in Tekniikan Maailma, Finland, 20/1986.
I reprinted only the part of the article that was about Suzuki.
It says that the The yellow dread from Japan has
concentrated in developing only the two ofits smallest motocrossers.
It says: The 500cc version was whitdrawn from the line
after the double win of Brad Lackey and Andre Vromans in the
World Championship series in 1982. It is the smallest models
that are Suzuki's winners. More than a dozen World Championships
has been won with them.
And the article continues: As for the other brands, Suzuki's
125cc RM has not gone through any revolutionary changes for
the '97. The engine has got a so called guillotine valve that
improves the torque at lower revs. Also the alternator and the
flywheel has been redesigned. The front suspension has got dampening
for both up- and downward movements. There's adjustments for
both directions and the meaning of this is to stabilize the
front wheel when using the brakes. As for the rear suspension;
after trying it for a year, Suzuki gave up the experimental
lower fastening type and returned to the older type. The rear
shocker has got a piggyback container attached. The 125 and
250cc model frames are both made of chrome molybden steel profiles.
Already for the last year's bikes Suzuki used oval profile instead
of round pipe.
For the 250cc engine, the company uses its own SBC (Suzuki
Boron Composite) coatng. It's lighter than normal metal and
removes heat faster. The manufacturers have not given the power
figures for their motocrossers for years. The RM250 delivers
over 50 hp today. To be able to restrain the speed, one has
mounted a disc brake even for the rear wheel.
