1984 Suzuki year code: E

Suzuki presented a whole new lineup in 1981 with
Katana styled bikes where fuel tank, seat, side covers and tail
were blended together, in some cases with a cockpit fairing. Initially
there were three of them, GSX1100S, GS550M and GS650G. Later came
the GSX1000S Katana and the GSX400L, a model with a parallel twin
DOHC engine.
Suzuki’s second-generation four-stroke engine is a newly designed 550 cm³ air-cooled 4-cylinder DOHC 4-valve engine equipped with Twin Swirl Combustion Chambers (TSCC). The GSX550L incorporates this high-performance engine into a cruiser-style street bike. Improved cooling efficiency was realized by adopting an oil jet piston ring cooling system. As a result, the new engine is lightweight and compact, and generates impressive maximum horsepower of 64 PS. The Suzuki GSX550L also features a double cradle frame that uses newly developed hexagonal pipes to realize low weight and high rigidity. It is also equipped with the Full-Floater rear suspension, a novelty at the time the bike's release.
