Suzuki GF250
1985–1989

I have tried to tell the model history of the Suzuki GF 250 S as I know it. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

Suzuki GF250 is a sporty naked motorcycle with a 250cc 4-cylinder engine released by Suzuki in March 1985. Its liquid-cooled single cam (2 valves per cylinder) inline-4 engine was used in the Suzuki GS250FW, released in 1983 The carburetor is a 2-barrel type with 2 cylinders in one body. The GF250 is about 20 kg (44 lbs) lighter than its precessor, the FW250 with had a half cowl fairing.

In the heyday of racer replicas, the naked GF250 was launched with an engine that had 4 horsepower less than the Japanese upper limit of 45 hp for the 250cc bikes. The appeal of the GF was in its light body and nice handling.

The engine is mounted on a steel L-BOX frame and it's got a 16-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear wheel. The rear suspension is a full floater type that can adjust the preload with a separate dial.

Suzuki GF250 had some quite advanced features. It was the first standard bike to use floating brake disc, 2 pistons pushing the disc from each side (4 pistons in total). It also had a 4-to-1 cyclone type exhaust system, and PDF (Positive Damping Fork) front suspension. It's a clever new system Suzuki developed alongside with the ANDF (Anti Nose Dive Forks). Shock absorbers had valves with a return spring so that if you hit a bump with the suspension stiffened, the valve could return and restore oil flow to the forks to absorb the bumps.

Colors: Pearl Cool White, Space Black, Marble Saint Red
The white and the black versions had a blue seat, the red one had a black seat. All three models had red ignition cables.

In 1986, the peak power of the Suzuki GF250 engine was enchaged by increasing the diameter of the carburetor and reviewing the intake and exhaust system. It gained four horsepower and went from 41 horsepower to the 45 horsepower to compete with the rivals, Yamaha FZ250 being its main contender. A side stand warning light was also added.

While the first edition of the GF250 boasted with the text ”Liquid Cooled Four” on the fuel tank, the text had been changed to ”Suzuki” on the 1986 model.

No other noticeably changes were made to the model after 1986. The GF250 was discontinued in 1989.

The Suzuki GF250 appeared early in the mid-eighties when the racing replicas were very popular. In 1986 Suzuki released the GF250S, equipped with a half cowl, and in 1987 it launched the GSX-R250.
