I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

1989 Suzuki DR Big 50 sales brochure from Spain (2 pages). Click to enlarge. The first version of the DR50 ”Dester-Express”. Its engine was made in Italy by Franco Morini GS, but the bike was assembled in Spain. Also, the piston, the cylinder and the rear light housing was made in Spain. The yellow bike had black frame and yellow wheels, the blue one had white coated frame and gray wheels. The bike had no turn indicators. I found these images on Ebay. I retouched the photos to make them look better. No date mentioned, but I pretty sure it's for the 1989 model. Correct me if I'm wrong.

About the DR50 model

Antonio Cuadra, who was kind enough to mail the brochure scans to me, tells that DR 50 W 1994 was made at Suzuki Motor España, at a factory in Gijón (Asturias) in the Northern Spain. The factory was earlier a Puch factory (Suzuki and Puch was manufacturing together lots of mopeds until Puch was bought by the Piaggio group), and much earlier a MV Augusta factory (filial).

The model used a Franco Morini GS liquid-cooled engine (made in Italy) with 4 speed and pedals (like bicycles) at the swing arm, the latter because the Spanish driving license for mopeds requires that the mopped has pedals. Another requirement in those days was maximum weight of 66 kg (now it can be exceeded). This vehicle was in production until 1999. The late models had no pedals.

Antonio Cuadra writes articles for a Spanish scooter magazine called "Fórmula Scooting". See even the link below - Antonios article of the history of Suzuki Motor España.
