 Suzuki DR400
1980—1981
| I have tried to tell the DR 400 model history on this page
as I know it. This page is still under construction.
I would be grateful of any contributions sales brochures, magazine ads,
magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material
in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send
them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible.
If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these
instructions.

Suzuki DR400 was a trail type motorcycle model. It was one of the first DR (Dual Ride) bikes of Suzuki's range of single-cylinder four-stroke trails including the DR125, DR600 and DR650. The DR400 appeared for the 1980 season. It replaced the SP/DR370. To obtain this displacement, the engine adopts a bore of 88 mm. This modest single-cylinder engine develops 25 hp at 7,600 rpm. Braking is provided by single cam drums, 160 mm at the front and 150 mm at the rear. The DR400 was replaced by the DR500.
Two versions of the DR400 were available, the road-legal DR400S
with rear mirrors, turn signals and better headlight. The DR400 that was made only for offroad riding. Both version had twin shock rear suspension, 1980 being the last year for the last year for that old-fashioned suspension arrangemant.
It seems that the DR400 was not available in many parts of the world. It was only available in the United States and some other countries (New Zealand being one of them), therefore the DR400 is the more collectable then the mass produced DR400S, because of the single year of manafacture (1980). The rest of the world never got the DR400 and there were some enhancements that the DR400S didn't have (longer front forks, alloy tank and less bling that made it very light compared to the S etc. |

1980 Suzuki year code: T

The two available colors for the '80 DR400S were Rocky White (10V) and Racing Blue (08Y). The DR400 was only available in White.
