I have tried to tell the DR 200 SE model history on this page as I know it. This page is still under construction. Introduced in 1993 (Japan) the DR200SE was a descendant of the DR200, the added 'E' telling that the bike has an electric starter. The domestic model sold in Japan was called Djebel. Export to Western countries started in 1996. Apart from the change of graphics, the model remained mostly unchanged until production stopped in 2013, with the introduction of the DR200S. It's essentially the same bike mechanically, with minor upgrades to the seat and the plastics. This lightweight, low-cost motorcycle is often used by beginners. It has a four-stroke, 199 cc (12.1 cu in) single-cylinder engine and can be ridden offroad or licensed for street use. It has a five-speed transmission and push-button start with electronic ignition. The seat height (810 mm / 31.9 in) is low for an off-road vehicle. Thanks to the low fuel consumption of 53.4 km/liter at 60km/h constant speed and the large 13 liter fuel tank, it was possible for a to ride long distances with a single refueling. The DR200SE had large-diameter halogen headlight and aluminum guards to protect it. There were no rear carrier but the flat rear fender and the rear grips could be used for loading luggage. There are models in some parts of the world with a kickstart, handguard, left and right side stand, oil radiator, front luggage carrier-headlight guard and rear luggage carrier.

To my best knowledge, there was no 1996 DR200SET Djebel released for the Japanese market. Marketing of the 1995 Suzuki DR200SES Djebel continued in Japan, with many colors to choose from. The Suzuki DR200SE was now available even outside Japan. Only one color option was shown in the generic brochure for the export model: Special White No.2 / Iris Purple (E3D). The Djebel name was not used outside Japan.

The domestic version of the 2000 Suzuki DR200SEY Djebel was available in two colors, silver and blue — but with two different graphics and with white or chrome plated rear carrier. The color options were called Sonic Silver Metallic / Special White (L3F), Sonic Silver Metallic / Special White (FH7), Pearl Deep Blue / Special White (Z3X) and Pearl Deep Blue / Special White (F6F) The export model of the Suzuki DR200SE was available in the same blue color as its Japanese equivalent.

It’s not hard to see why Suzuki Is a market leader in two-wheel farm motorcycles when you consider the durable DR200 Trojan has been a mainstay on many farms for nearly 20 years. The DR200 has proven to be a tough and reliable two-wheel farm bike, cementing its popular place in the hearts of farmers. Developed by then Suzuki New Zealand service manager Tom Peck, the DR200 was not only constructed with Kiwi farmers in mind, but was also tested on farms around the rugged Wanganui hillsides and flatlands. Starting with a road legal trail bike, the DR200 project grew to encompass not only engineered features, but also mechanical modifications designed to ensure longevity on the farm. For example, the four stroke electric start DR200 engine received a special CDI (ignition control) that managed the advance curve to prevent detonation when heavily loaded. The ignition system also has a lower redline than the road version so that enthusiastic revving of the engine won’t result in immediate damage. An oil cooler was fitted to assist with keeping engine temperatures down when the motorcycle is operated at low speeds and a change to the gearing meant the Trojan could easily be ridden behind cattle in the race, or up a tricky hillside. With corrosion a leading cause of early failures on NZ farm motorcycles, quality features such as the stainless steel exhaust header pipe were fitted as part of the development work. With a reliable engine, the chassis and running gear came in for some special attention. A 12 volt, large diameter headlight was considered an absolute must for dairy farmers, along with dual side-stands and reshaped guards to equip the Trojan with the best mud protection on the farm. Aluminium handlebar guards, along with a steel headlight protector and engine guards, meant the Trojan could survive the odd knock or drop without damage. A large rear carrier was developed to safely carry more than the competitors’ bikes, while the seat height has been reduced to be the lowest in its class. The long seat means riders can shift their weight to safely manage steeper terrain and this, in conjunction with the long aluminium swing-arm, ensures that uphill the Trojan is arguably the most stable in this category. Combine this with motocross-derived suspension technology and the Trojan is a go-almost-anywhere motorcycle with a great combination of comfort and safety.
