2025 Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM in action

Suzuki Motor Corporation unveiled the all-new DR-Z4S dual-purpose model and DR-Z4SM supermoto model at the EICMA 2024 (Milan Show) in November 2024. Sales for the DR-Z4S were scheduled to start from April 2025, and the DR-Z4SM from May 2025 in each country, primarily in North America and Europe. The DR-Z4S model replaces the DR-Z400S, launched in 2000. In fact, the internal model code for the DR-Z4S is still DR-Z400S. Suzuki told that both models comply with current emission, noise and brake regulations without sacrificing agile handling and smooth engine characteristics. The styling design is aggressive and modern, with LED lights and LCD instrument panel. The tires and dimensions are optimised so that each model provides excellent riding performance for the dual-purpose and supermoto models. The newly installed electronic control systems S.I.R.S. (Suzuki Intelligent Ride System) adopts Suzuki Traction Control System including G (gravel) mode, SDMS (Suzuki Drive Mode Selector) and ABS OFF mode to best suit riders’ level of skill and road conditions.

Powering both the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM is a new 398 cc, single-cylinder, liquid cooled, DOHC four-stroke engine. The new engine was designed to meet Euro 5B, while maintaining the reputation of robustness and reliability the engine found in the previous generation DR-Z400 was famed for. It provides a smooth, linear power delivery with stronger torque at lower rpm and increased power output to the rev limit, plus improved fuel economy.  When compared to the previous DR-Z400 engine, there are changes to almost every aspect, from lightweight titanium intake valves and hollow, sodium-filled exhaust valves to new cam profiles and piston. A new cylinder head is equipped with twin spark plugs, there are new crankcases, and a new slipper clutch with Suzuki’s Clutch Assist System.  Fuelling comes courtesy of a ride-by-wire, 4 2mm bore, electronic throttle body and a 10-hole fuel injector. There’s a new air box, and a new exhaust. The result is a broader spread of power across the rev range, strong drive yet smooth ride, a direct, linear throttle response, and improved fuel economy.  Peak power is 38 hp @ 8,000 rpm, with a peak torque figure of 37 Nm @ 6,500 rpm. Both achieve over 80 mpg.

The two DR-Z4 models use a new twin-spar steel frame with a separate, bolt-on aluminium subframe and aluminium swingarm, housing a new 398cc single-cylinder engine. There’s also an electronics package that includes power modes, switchable ABS, and a sophisticated traction control system with off-road modes.

The 2026 Suzuki DR-Z4S is unchanged from its 2025 model. The 2025 model was the first major update to the DR-Z400S in 25 years. The DR-Z4S received a significant update in 2025 to meet modern emissions standards (Euro 5+), including a new fuel-injected engine, modern chassis, electronics like ABS and traction control, and revised ergonomics. Color options (may vary between different markets): Champion Yellow No.2 / Solid Special White No.2 (C1C) and Solid Iron Gray (YUD)
