Suzuki Gemma Questo 90
1986–1990

I have tried to tell the model history of the Suzuki Gemma Quest 90 as I know it. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

The Suzuki Gemma Quest 90 was released in September 1986 in Japan for the domestic market. It was the successor model to the Gemma 80, a class-2 moped scooter that had been on sale since 1983.

”Gemma” is Italian and means ”jewel”, and the ”Quest” ”This is it”. So, the literal translation of ”Gemma Quest” is ”This is the jewel”.

This Questo series was introduced as a evolution of the previous model, an enhanced second-generation Gemma. It also includes a younger brother model, Gemma Questo 50. However, a successor model to the Gemma 125, which was sold as an older model, was not added to the Questo lineup.

The body of the Gemma Questo 90 is equipped with a reed valve air-cooled 2-stroke single-cylinder engine mounted on a pipe underbone frame. Although the number ”90” was added to the model name, the D105 engine used was 82cc, which was a mere 3 cm³ increase in displacement from the previous model's 79cc. The peak power of the engine is 7.2 hp at 6,500 rpm, that is 0.5 hp more compared to the Gemma 80. The seat is a tandem type for two people. Accordning to the laws of Japan, you are allowed to travle with a passenger with the Gemma Questo because it's classified as a class-2 moped.

The transmission has also been changed from the Gemma 80's three-speed automatic to a V-belt continuously variable transmission for smooth acceleration performance.

The retail price of the was Gemma Questo 90 was set to 176,000 yen, an increase of 2,000 yen from the price of the Gemma 80. In 1989, the price was dropped from 176,000 yen to 170,000 yen.
