| 1983 Suzuki CY50 Bara, Pure Red (07G) |
Reflecting the diversifying needs of the scooter market, this slim and compact model was designed to be ridden with ease by anyone. Following on from the Ran (“Orchid”), the Bara was named after the Japanese word for “Rose.” The 50 cm³ air-cooled 2-stroke engine generates maximum horsepower of 3.8 PS. Paired with an automatic transmission that realizes a smooth acceleration feeling, the Bara achieves brisk and agile dynamic performance. Effortless handling was realized by the adoption of the Pointless Electronic Ignition (PEI) system as well as the start system from the Ran, in which the engine cannot be started without pulling the left brake lever.

1983 Suzuki year code: D

The Suzuki Ran (Japanese for ”Orchide”) was launched for the domestic market in Japan in December 1982. It was a small and light scooter, easy to handle and targeted for the female segment. It was a popular bike and the following year Suzuki launched another small scooter with a flower name, the Bara (”Rose”).
Suzuki CY50 Bara
was launched in October 1983. Like Ran, the Suzuki Bara was an automatic light scooter. It was even slimmer than and more compact that Ran, and weighed 3 kg (6.6 lbs) less. The bikes looked quite similar. Suzuki Bara had a white seat while the Ran had a black seat.
It had a cute and compact styling and is equipped with a forced air-cooled 2-stroke single-cylinder engine unit, delivering a maximum output of 3.6 ps at 5,500 rpm. Combined with the automatic mechanism and lightweight body, it was easy to handle and the fuel consumption was low. The scooter's slender body and low seat height (680mm) made it easy to get in and out.
The ignition system was pointless PEI transitorized ignitionand a ”safe start” mechanism that is easy to operate even for beginners. Starting the engine is not possible unless the left brake is pressed. The scooter had 8-inch wheels and leading and trailing drum brakes front and rear.
At first the Suzuki Bara was only available with a kick start but
from 1984 a model with an electric starter was also available.
