The updated Bandit 250 was advertised as ”New Bandit 250”. This full model change saw the first adoption of the Variable Valve Control (VC) variable valve timing and lift mechanism in its class, which varies the valve timing and lift amount according to the engine speed, to bring out the ideal output characteristics. The frame shape was retained, but it was redesigned and newly equipped with an aluminum swing arm, radial tires, triple meter with fuel gauge, slip-on muffler, hazard lights, and a storage compartment under the seat.
The standard model without the VC engine underwent similar improvements and was released in January. The Bandit 250V can be distinguished from the rest by its red-painted engine head and inner brake rotor.

In 1997, towards the end of the model's lifespan, the "VZ" model, equipped with a bikini cowl and separate handlebars, was added to the lineup. While its performance is generally on par with the "V," its smaller cowl gives it the best stability at high speeds in the series.
